A heavy weight washi (65 gsm) 30% kozo, 70% lignin free wood pulp. This is a sized paper but for some prints with a lot of plates I size the paper again to manage the moisture.
Pure pigment that needs to be mixed with a medium. For block printing I use starch paste. The base colours are Hansa Yellow Light, Qunacridone Magenta, Phthalo Blue and sumi ink (black).
Used for Japanese mokuhanga water based wood block printing.
I also use a DIY version with tapioca starch.
20 Gr Tapioca Starch
250 ml water
Heat while stirring until thickened. Add the preservative as its cooling.
Optiphen (preservative) 1.5%
Used for Japanese mokuhanga water based wood block printing.
Used for western style block printing technique.
3mm Basswood plywood - Made for the laser cutting craft. I mount this on to thicker plywood to manage the warping from water based ink.
1/2" MDF - Works well but needs to be sealed. Shellac seems to work well.
Birch plywood - This does work but can be very brittle with fine detail.
Shina plywood - Made in Japan for mokuhanga. Expensive and hard to obtain in Canada. Works and carves very well.
Linoleum - The battleship grey stuff is easy to carve, but for traditional western printing.
