Oil based ink on 35 gsm Japanese gampi paper - Edition 40
Oil based ink and watercolour on 70gsm Japanese kozo paper - Edition 20
Bridge at West Montrose is a limited edition print from a wood engraving. Wood engraving uses the same tools as metal and jewelry engraving. The small tools create much shallower and finer cuts vs lino and woodcut tools.
The colour version is hand painted with watercolour with varied colours making each print unique.
The black and white version is printed on a natural coloured Japanese paper called Kitakata. There are small dark flecks which are part of the inner bark of the gampi plant.
Process Overview - First I make the block with MDF and apply a special resin blend to make an engravable surface. Traditionally wood engravings are done on the endgrain vs the face of the wood for woodblock printing. The image is hand carved with fine engraving hand push tools. The ink is applied to the final engraving and the Japanese paper is then hand pressed with a japanese baren. For the tinted prints I use Holbein pigment paste and watercolour brushes.
